The Vision of Emily Dickinson

"Emily Dickinson had more cognitive originality than any western poet since Dante," said Harold Bloom in his recent book, The Western Canon Except for Shakespeare.

Filled with passion, Miss Dickinson nevertheless remained the spinster daughter of a very patriarchal father. And yet within the confines of her house and garden she was able to see to infinity and write about her vision in a simple way, compelling us, by the haunting rhythm of her verse, to walk with her into a realm of one enticing "indefinite" after another. In this course we will read her lines and attempt to articulate her vision.

Led by Geoffrey E. Wood, S.S.L., S.T.D.
Dr. Wood has a Ph.D. in Sacred Theology from Catholic University, Washington, D.C., and a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from Rome's Pontifical Bible Institute. He has taught at Catholic University, Swarthmore and Bucknell University.
