Psychological Development in Later Life In this four-week series we will explore psychological development in later life, drawing on the work of Erik Erikson and Carl Jung. Erikson is the founder of lifespan development, the study of psychological growth throughout life. Erikson believed there were two developmental struggles that need to be resolved in later life: generativity versus stagnation and integrity versus despair. We will talk about how these struggles occur in our own lives and ways to negotiate them. Jung considered the second half of life an opportunity to turn inward, to reflect about the meaning of our lives thus far. Jung regarded this stage of life as a transitional time when we are between what used to be and what is to come. In the class we will talk about shedding roles and relationships that no longer fit, about letting go of some dreams and expectations, of coming to terms with the past. We will compile a bibliography of helpful books. There will be time for talking, writing and reflection. Maureen Adams is a writer, an adjunct faculty member for the University of San Francisco, and a licensed psychologist in private practice in Santa Rosa and Napa. Cost: $48.
