Friday of 2nd Week of Lent

March 12, 2004

Gen 37:3-4:12-13;17-28

Matthew 21:33-43; 45-46

Scripture
"They sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver."
Reflection
Joseph was a good man, envied by his brothers and sold into slavery by them. Like Jesus, Joseph was misunderstood, tempted, and imprisoned. Like Jesus, Joseph will overcome betrayal and unhappiness with innocence and goodness.

Joseph and Jesus had every reason to be depressed and gloomy; Lent is by tradition a time of depression and gloom. Consider, however, that Lent coincides with the arrival of spring and precedes the Easter season, a time of resurrection and joy.

Joseph and Jesus were both able to forgive wicked deeds done to them by remembering their origin, their mission, and their future. They remained faithful to who they knew they were.

Mantra
In times of depression, let me remember the joy.
