In
the Gospel of John we read the story of Mary Magdalene anointing Jesus
with a valuable perfume. It is my sense that Mary loved Jesus in the
same way that Jesus loves each of us. She believed that he should
have the most valuable gift she could give him, and her gift for that
moment was an expensive perfume. Though this passage is often seen
as a premonition on Mary's part that Jesus would soon die and be buried,
hence making anointing him logical, I believe it also shows us that
we should share our most valued gifts with others, because Jesus is
in every person we meet. Sometimes that valued gift is a material
item like money, food or perfume. Most times that gift is our help,
a skill we can share, or imparting information of value. Jesus tells
Judas not to criticize Mary's gift as an extravagance, reminding him,
"For the poor you will always have with you." Jesus is found
in every person, wealthy or poor, but most challengingly in the poor.
Lord, give me the
insight and wisdom to see Jesus in each person I meet, and to respond
in accord with your will.
