Isaiah 49:1-6

John 13:21-33:36-38

Scripture
"Jesus answered Peter: ' You will lay down your life for me, will you? I tell you truly, the cock will not crow before you have three times disowned me'."
Reflection
I am so encouraged by the bumbling Peter. He's so eager to follow Jesus, so sure of himself. And in front of all the disciples Jesus points out that before morning Peter will disown him. And yet Peter is his chosen and we acclaim Peter as the first leader of Christianity. Perfect, not Peter. For sure Peter was filled with flaws: too impetuous, too fearful, too short sighted…. And yet Peter is a perfect choice as leader. Perfect, because he is so not. Leadership, discipleship is not about perfection or lording it over others, but about that eagerness to follow, that eagerness to try. Judas' downfall was not his betrayal of Jesus but rather his not starting again, not turning back for forgiveness. Judas couldn't admit his failings and still be a disciple; he couldn't stand not being perfect.
Mantra
May I be eager to follow even when I fail
