Revelation
is a term and doctrine that has fallen into disrepute in modern
times. It connotes the unveiling of the truth about the universe
and humanity by angels or visions or writings said to be inspired
- and this runs counter to the principles of science, namely that
reliable truth about anything is attainable through strict, empirical
observation and measurements - indeed that mathematics comes closest
to the truth of reality.
But
monopoly of this narrow, functional notion of truth is contested
by many. Even science only "reveals" a world, unveils
a world within the limits of its methods. And so also the Bible
reveals a world, the scope of which reaches beyond the functionalism
of science to display in imagery and historical types the deeper
meaning of human existence. And so also does literature.
During
these sessions we shall explore the "worlds" revealed
by Scripture but especially by biblically grounded literature,
e.g. the "world" as revealed in the novels of Charles
Dickens - The Old Curiosity Shop; Hard Times; Great Expectations
- and if possible, the "world" of the author of the
award winning Broadway play Doubt .
The
question to be pondered by this course is: Which "revealed"
world do we want to live in?
