It
is a dark time when wrongdoing seems to be rife. Accusations fly.
While trying to mete out judgment and punishment to the wrongdoers,
more wrongdoing is heaped on the pile. Discouragement comes all too
readily. How to put it right?
It is the cultivation
of small mercies that gives the most comfort--to a
family member whose political views appear utterly wrongheaded,
another family member with a psychiatric disorder whose behavior
triggers the worst in one; a parent, child, co-worker or spouse
who quietly, or not so quietly, exasperates one. Here's how the
Dalai Lama puts it:
"True compassion
is not just an emotional response, but a firm
commitment founded on reason. Therefore, a truly compassionate attitude
toward others does not change, even if they behave negatively."
